To learn and practice directional words up, down, left and right (which will be needed for the family tree activity)
On Thursday I tried to teach them top, bottom, middle, center, left and right so that they could piece together a family tree. In general, the students balked over using any English at all.
So on Saturday, I hope to try a different activity where students have to get Raggedy Andy through a maze to get to Raggedy Ann using the words up, down, left and/or right.
 
 

Display maze. Place Raggedy Ann figure in diagram. Place Raggedy Andy by a door. Have a student say "up","down", "left", "right", to take Andy to Ann. Penalty for non-English ... move back two spaces.

I referred to the Oxford Picture dictionary pictures on families. Groups put together the family tree drawing and diagram on the floor. Then the group was divided among four volunteers (Judy, Jim, Pat and Jerry) with smaller versions of the diagram and questions to answer. The smaller diagram was in black and white and harder to read. On Saturday I plan to use colored versiona and also a handout of the family terminology.
